"A Complete Guide to Using Printing and Dyeing Penetrants: Technical Keys to Optimizing Dyeing Effects"

1. Preparation before use

Understand fiber types and dye properties

Fiber types: Natural fibers (such as cotton and linen) and synthetic fibers (such as polyester and nylon) have different requirements for penetrants.

Dye types: Acid dyes, reactive dyes, disperse dyes, etc. have specific requirements for the selection of penetrants.

Choose the right penetrant

Non-ionic penetrants: Suitable for most fibers, with excellent wetting and penetration properties.

Anionic penetrants: Commonly used in cotton fiber dyeing, which can increase the dye uptake rate.

Special purpose penetrants: Such as high temperature resistant and hard water resistant penetrants, suitable for specific process conditions.

Check the quality of the penetrant

Appearance: There should be no stratification, no precipitation, and no odor.

pH value: It should meet the requirements of the product manual, generally neutral or weakly alkaline.

2. Usage steps

 Pretreatment

Cleaning fabrics: Ensure that there is no oil or impurities on the surface of the fabric, and perform pre-treatment such as desizing and scouring if necessary.

Adjust pH value: Adjust the pH value of the dye liquor according to the requirements of the dye and penetrant.

 Prepare dye liquor

Calculate dosage: Determine the amount of penetrant to be added per liter of dye liquor (usually 0.5-2 g/L) according to the instructions for use of the penetrant.

Dissolve penetrant: Slowly add the penetrant to the dye liquor, stirring while adding to ensure complete dissolution.

Add dye: After the penetrant is completely dissolved, add the dye and continue stirring until uniform.

Dyeing operation

Temperature control: Set the appropriate dyeing temperature according to the dye and fiber type (such as reactive dyes are usually dyed at 60-90℃).

Time control: The dyeing time is generally 30-60 minutes, and the specific time is adjusted according to the process requirements.

pH value control: Keep the pH value of the dye liquor stable during the dyeing process, and add a buffer if necessary.

 Post-treatment

Washing: After dyeing, wash the fabric thoroughly with clean water to remove floating colors and unfixed dyes.

Color fixation: Perform color fixation treatment as needed to improve color fastness.

Drying: Dry the fabric to complete the dyeing process.

3. Precautions

Dosage control

Excessive use of penetrant may cause excessive penetration of the dye and affect color fastness; too little use will result in poor penetration.

It is recommended to conduct a small sample test first to determine the optimal dosage.

Temperature and pH value

The performance of the penetrant is greatly affected by temperature and pH value, and the process conditions should be strictly controlled in accordance with the product instructions.

Compatibility

The compatibility of the penetrant with other auxiliaries (such as leveling agents and fixing agents) needs to be tested in advance to avoid adverse reactions.

Safety protection

The penetrant may be irritating to the skin and eyes, and protective gloves and goggles should be worn during operation.

If accidentally contacted, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical help.

Storage conditions

The penetrant should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and high temperature.

It should be used as soon as possible after opening to avoid performance degradation caused by long-term storage.

4. Summary

Printing and dyeing penetrants are important auxiliaries to improve dyeing quality. Correct use of penetrants can significantly improve dyeing effects. During use, the appropriate penetrant should be selected according to the fiber type, dye characteristics and process conditions, and the dosage, temperature and pH value should be strictly controlled. At the same time, pay attention to safety protection and storage conditions to ensure the stability of the penetrant performance. Through scientific and reasonable use, efficient, uniform and environmentally friendly dyeing effects can be achieved.
